I once calculated that around 9k males have run faster than FloJo.pic.twitter.com/EVKmcu4x9k

I had to calculate because the IAAF don’t publish male times past 10.3s (FloJo 10.49). I asked for access to their full list.

They hold nothing formal before 2000. But 3646 males have run quicker than 10.49s since then.pic.twitter.com/8MXShHxSph

10.7s is current Olympic champ time. 10219 males quicker than Elaine Thompson.

All those pointing out that FloJo was almost certainly drug-assisted. Understood. This only makes the numbers more unbearable. Even drug fuelled women are beaten by thousands of males.

Some of the men running 10.5 will be doping, of course. But doesn't negate your point. Have you ever checked out the difference between male & female elite squash? It's very striking (squash relies heavily on explosive power).

No. I work with a squash player and I’m always asking him to show me the moves he makes. Like Jane Fonda around the coffe room. Do we lunge this low??

Explosive power may be a decisive factor in short sprint events and power events such as squash - although I think in ultra endurance events there may be a little more ambiguityhttps://trailrunnermag.com/people/is-women-winning-ultras-overall-a-trend.html …

Much more. Elaine Morgan backed up her "aquatic ape" theory with the (unsubstantiated) claim that women won long distance swimming events. But I used to jog with the outright winner of London to Brighton. And women are good at v long ultras.

Yes - I think in last years Ironman World Championships Lucy Charles was the faster overall swimmer, so that doesn't surprise me.

Morgan's claim was that this was because of subcutaneous fat. I think the Ironman swim is 3 miles. I can't see how this mattered in our evolutionary history, myself. Long runs, yes. Short sprints, yes. 3 miles swims? Nope.

Possibly worth pointing out that Lucy Charles finished way ahead of every other woman in the race - and in the history of the event, so....

Also, the subcutaneous fat buoyancy thing is offset by the wetsuits competitors have to wear. And the Ironman isn't won on the swim.

They don't always wear wetsuits, it depends on the weather - last year in Hawaii it was ridiculously hot, so I suspect they just wore swimsuits
