In the present day, what's the chance she would have come to the conclusion that the fact she didn't feel comfortable identifying as a woman meant she was in fact a trans man? Not vanishingly small, I'd wager.

The writer didn't feel comfortable identifying as a woman because she wanted to be free of the constraints of femininity.
