Some people will find it embarrassing to have their ID checked when they're actually over 18, but that's not a reason to stop checking. Not even if they find the experience very unpleasant.
Honestly as a butch woman I've gotten double takes. I usually just smils, say I'm a woman, and upon hearing my voice, seeing my face, they say 'oh sorry!' and move on. I wonder how many people are really getting their id checked.
