Here's the thing. Men have been doing bloody awful things to women since pretty much the beginning of history. It's outrageously regressive to suggest that the sex binary is a modern invention, an insult to the memory of the countless women who have died at the hands of men.

Well, men, as a class, did horrible things to women, as a class. Women, of course, sometimes do horrible thing, but there's no female army that rampaged it's way across half a continent raping women as it went (as the Soviet Army did).

I understand that you might think feminism overreaches itself in the present day, but you can't really claim that women have been treated well by men across the whole swathe of history. That's not plausible.

But the point of my tweet was to do with somebody who seems to be denying that history recognized the difference between males and females. I'm just saying you can't really understand the way Henry VIII went about things (for example), if that were true.
