Here's the thing. Men have been doing bloody awful things to women since pretty much the beginning of history. It's outrageously regressive to suggest that the sex binary is a modern invention, an insult to the memory of the countless women who have died at the hands of men.

Did Ellis possibly mean the "gender binary"? We have to change DNA if we want to change sex, but men's and women's roles in society are influenced by culture and have varied historically.
I don't think he knows what he means. He does explicitly say in a subsequent tweet something to the effect that the sex binary is a cultural creation, which obviously it isn't (except to the extent that all concepts are specified in language, etc).

I am not defending him, but he did refer to Laqueur in one of his later tweets. The theory that historically, women were seen as "imperfect men" before the enlightenment, when differences between the sexes were emphasised. A theory that has been challenged.
