Here's the thing. Men have been doing bloody awful things to women since pretty much the beginning of history. It's outrageously regressive to suggest that the sex binary is a modern invention, an insult to the memory of the countless women who have died at the hands of men.

I am not defending him, but he did refer to Laqueur in one of his later tweets. The theory that historically, women were seen as "imperfect men" before the enlightenment, when differences between the sexes were emphasised. A theory that has been challenged.
