Is this an occasion where a non-historian (i.e., me) is misusing a historical example to make a contemporary point? (That's a serious question!) I'm aware of the dangers of anachronism, of course.

Thanks, that's good to know. I'm always a bit nervous invoking history, but I'm increasingly of the view that all sociologists should be required to spend a long time studying history. Might cure them of their rose tinted utopian yearnings.
