Bertrand Russell was pelted with eggs, and rats were let loose at a hustings when he stood for election. There was also fighting, and general shenanigans. I guess that's just what happened when you were advocating for women's suffrage in 1907.

The idea of the rats was to frighten the "ladies" present, thereby demonstrating that women should not have the vote. Or something. Oddly enough, the plot involved women who thought that women should not get the vote screaming a lot when the rats were freed.

Apparently, people jumped on chairs to avoid the rats, which were then killed - at the meeting - by some very brave gentlemen.
