‘Sex’ is a description of reproductive anatomy, of meat and gristle, of glands and tubes. It is not an abstract concept and it exists outside of human cognition. People will have to prise the definitions of ‘female’ and ‘male’ out of my cold, dead hands.https://twitter.com/Bleedinheart2MD/status/1082053694940696576 …

A thought that has come later to me than this original post. Sex in many species is very much a vegetarian affair, and not meat/gristle/viscera. Most plants have a sex - male or female - or contain recognisable sexed parts - male and female - within the same individual.

If it's true "trans women are biologically female" - how does that work for people who detransition? Does that mean they were female, & then became male? If so, the notion of being biologically female seems redundant. Or is it that they were never biologically female?

Presumably they were mistaken about being trans. Or they detransitioned because they couldn't cope with the stigma, so they're mistaken now. Only they can answer that question. Being honest with yourself is hard sometimes.

What about when people change their mind about their sexual orientation, coming out and then going back into the closet. Which identity was real and which was a mistake. Again, only they can answer that.

Sure, but that just sidesteps the problem here. The claim is trans women have female biology simply as a function of their identification as a woman. Therefore, it's possible a person has exactly the same biology as they had as a man, but now they are biologically female.

So in terms of your example, it's a bit like somebody declaring that they are now gay, but nothing about their sexual orientation has changed. They still have exclusively heterosexual sex, fantasies, desires, etc. This sort of thing would certainly result in raised eyebrows...

But more significantly, it would render the concept of being "gay" meaningless. There would be nothing to distinguish being gay from being straight. Which might be fine, except then you need another term/concept to describe real material differences between sexual orientations.

So it's the same with the point about biology. You can certainly render the concept of "biology" subordinate to gender identification. But it doesn't get you anywhere, because the concept itself simply becomes redundant. And you're still left with real "biological" differences.

Your general point about why people might detransition, I entirely accept, of course. It is no doubt a complex phenomenon.
