More like denying something fundamental to their self conception. If I was to frame it in more philosophical terms I'd say it was like denying a fundamental premise their reality is based on. e.g. If you claim I am wrong that 1+1=2, or p=/= ¬p.

Indeed. One can disagree with a psychic's description of him/herself as a being endowed with special mental powers and still acknowledge that the person is a human endowed with the full array of rights.

"their existence" in the sense of the validity of their internal experience. Theres also an element of power dynamics in it I think, Bob tells me 2+2=5 I can ignore them, if the party tells me 2+2=5 they can force that on me

This would make sense if the phrase used was “denying someone’s existence”. But “denying someone their existence” sounds like it should mean “killing someone”.
