Tribalism makes people stupid. It robs them of their ability to think straight (an ability they likely didn't have in great supply in the first place). It inevitably prioritizes group approval over any desire to get to the truth of things. It also makes people feel good.
Don't underestimate the importance of the last factor. The feeling of righteous solidarity is very seductive, especially among people who might otherwise feel a bit lost.
The desire for group approval over truth is a particular problem when practised by academics who are supposed to be committed to the discovery of truth. A depressingly common phenomenon.
Once I campaigned for Scottish Independence. Some guy approached me with positive enthusiasm and agreed with me, then said anyone who disagrees isn't truly Scottish. I didn't really agree with that but I felt pressure not to push back. He was basically on my side after all.
