Tribalism makes people stupid. It robs them of their ability to think straight (an ability they likely didn't have in great supply in the first place). It inevitably prioritizes group approval over any desire to get to the truth of things. It also makes people feel good.
Don't underestimate the importance of the last factor. The feeling of righteous solidarity is very seductive, especially among people who might otherwise feel a bit lost.
