Henri Tajfel's work on minimal groups is fairly terrifying in this regard. We're willing to do down the out-group, even if it's at own expense, even if the in-group is an arbitrary invention, so long as it maximises the difference between in-group & out-group rewards.

This is not only relevant to racism and bigotry but football hooliganism, the increasing polarization between left and right and between leavers and remainers. Many remainers are now wishing Brexit to be a disaster to spite leave voters.

Best recent example of this is the reaction of people on the left to Trump's meeting with Kim Jong-un. Most of them absolutely wanted it to go very badly.
