You'd be in the library, here a commotion outside, and then see a lad with his coat wrapped around his arm rush past a window with a large alsatian in hot pursuit. This happened about once a week.

Tell you what, though, probably the bravest person I've ever met was a pre-op trans woman, who braved that environment everyday. This is early 1980s, south London. It must have taken breathtaking courage.
