The auction is between more than a dozen companies. When the refinery went bankrupt, the execs got bonuses - while the 2,000 union workers were laid off without severance. The same execs get an extra bonus if it sells for more than a billion.
The ‘sells for more than a billion’ really puts it into perspective. This is a massive enterprise that poisons our air, our children, the workers, and puts 1.1 million Philadelphians in a blast zone.
Philadelphia Energy Solutions, the company that ran the site 2012-2019, put in a bid in August (https://www.inquirer.com/business/philip-rinaldi-philadelphia-energy-solutions-refinery-bankruptcy-purchase-offer-20190828.html …). The project went bankrupt, they know it’s poisonous and below epa standards, but they still want to try try again.
We won’t let them! Last Friday we submitted our people’s bid. We utilized solar power on land that’s been defined by fossil fuels for the last 150 years. And we aren’t going away.
