/ No matter who wins tonight we’re thankfully close to the end of the quadrennial obsession with Iowa and its caucus system. Which is good because Iowa is neither representative of anything aside from Iowa nor is its caucus system healthy.

/ Worse than peer pressure many have to see — if not confront — people in their lives they seek to avoid such as abusive ex-spouses & significant others. Older voters, infirmed voters, special needs voters are expected to participate in a multi-hour process requiring mobility.

/ Iowa’s not especially predictive of winning the White House. Since 1972, two Democrats who won Iowa were elected: Jimmy Carter in 1976, Barack Obama in 2008. Only one Republican, George W. Bush, won an opposed Iowa caucus, the nomination, went on to become president.

/ How did Iowa become first? Who cares. It’s not an interesting enough story worth telling. Certainly doesn’t warrant being first forever.

/ Why not change it? Or at least discuss changing it? Because anyone who does so gets pounced on. Anyone candidate who does so before a campaign risks the wrath of the Iowa Democratic Party, and Iowa voters themselves. As a result of this thread I will never be president.

/x Every reason Iowa‘s been first is no longer valid. Its caucus system is exclusionary & undemocratic. The onus shouldn’t be on rank & file Democrats to prove why Iowa shouldn’t be. The burden should be on Iowa and the DNC to justify why it’s first. But it’s verboten.

/ Though easy to think otherwise, my thread isn’t anti-Sanders or pro-Biden. And my wariness about Iowa predates my working for Hillary. And while this article focuses on them, its analysis of Iowa’s caucus voters vs its primary voters is worth reading.https://www.nytimes.com/2020/01/27/upshot/poll-iowa-caucus-biden.html …

/ Even if the political will to change the order doesn’t exist, keep the order but compress the first four into one week. Super Tuesday has near 20 contests. One week in February can handle four, two of which were put up front to better reflect reality. https://twitter.com/philippereines/status/1192475966045638657?s=21 …https://twitter.com/philippereines/status/1192475966045638657 …

/ The only reason Iowa & New Hampshire would resist the below isn’t to preserve their respective first in the nation status — because they’d remain first. It’s because they want the limelight to themselves for a stretch. But who cares what they want. https://twitter.com/philippereines/status/1192479715497521153?s=21 …https://twitter.com/philippereines/status/1192479715497521153 …

Couldn’t agree more. Also what about childcare or elder care or folks staying with loved ones in the hospital. Are they just shut out completely?
