Isn't the basic point correct tho? It's surely invalid to attack a whole book based on reading selected parts of it? (I haven't followed the case you mention so I'm not trying to weigh in on that).

I suspect that like everything else, it depends. It's complicated. I can imagine pieces of writing that no surrounding text could save; I can imagine how some iffy parts could be balanced by something that was overall good. I'm sure you can too.
