  2. The transepted passage grave of Mane-Groh in Erdeven (56) has a long passage (on the right here) leading to a chamber with four lateral cells each with its own capstone. The central part of the chamber had 3 capstones. There has been restoration since this view c. 1909

  3. The mythical forest of Broceliande has been “located” at several areas including the forest of Fougeres in Ille-et-Vilaine When these forests contain dolmens they are often seen in local folklore as being Merlin’s tomb or the home of Morgan etc.

  4. In its current state the dolmen of Lan-Kerellec in Trebeurden (22) has a single capstone supported on two orthostats either side and an end stone. It is clearly the chamber, or part of it, from a larger original structure either a passage grave or an allee couverte.

  5. This view of the best preserved of four dolmens at Mane-Remor in Plouharnel (56) was issued by David c.1901 using a plate by Le Rouzic. It shows 2 of the orthostats of the passage and the chamber with its heavy capstone. Woman in bonnet and striped apron not impressed!

  6. In one tradition the menhirs of the alignments at Menec in Carnac were thought to have grown like plants from pebbles sown in neat rows by fairies. The cows seem to prefer the grass tho...

  7. Views of the narrow and broad faces of the 5.5 metre tall menhir of Kerdunus in Tregunc (29) . Hamonic's caption says that once there were lots of megaliths and strange rocks nearby but they were broken up by quarrymen for building blocks and ballast.

  8. c. 1905 a Sunday afternoon visit to the 5.1 metre high menhir of Pierre Longue in Noyal-sous-Bazouges (35) could be made on foot, by bicycle or in a horse and carriage. Set in the talus it was christianised by the addition of a cross in the 1860s.

  9. As yesterday's view of the alignments of Menec at Carnac seemed popular this is another card by Vassellier of Nantes with the same four women striking a different pose a bit further along the rows.

  10. One tradition said that all 1169 stones of the alignments at Menec in Carnac were carried there and erected by "crions" who were only 60-90cm tall but stronger than giants. Each of them could carry a menhir single-handed without any help.

  11. The 4.5 metre high menhir at Beg-Meil in Fouesnant stood near the signal station. In the early 1900s it was painted white to serve as a landmark for sailors. Because of this it was knocked over during the 2nd war and has never been re-erected.

  12. What better place to visit for a Sunday afternoon outing in winter than the magnificent 17 metre long Loire dolmen of La Roche aux Fees at Esse (35). Make sure you don a winter coat, take your half life-sized doll and don't forget the dog might like a walk too.

  13. When the neolithic people built the megalithic tomb at Trevou-Treguignec in Cotes-d'Armor they doubtless had no idea that it would see a new as a barn on a dairy farm 5,000 years later!

  14. This woman almost looks as if she's standing guard ready to stop anyone entering the alignments du Moulin at St-Pierre-Quiberon (56). The tall stone on the right is known as the Great Monk as from some angles it has the profile of a man in a long habit and cowl. This card 1905.

  15. Despite some damage, the allee couverte at Ile-Milliau in Trebeurden (22) is still impressive with 15 surviving supports, 3 large capstones (hence its local name Trois Tables en Place), a fourth lying nearby and a fifth lost. This card, with 2 women for scale, by Levy c. 1916.

  16. The dolmen of Men-Milliget in Landunvez is known by other names. St-Gonvel, after the chapel by which it stands. And Roche Maudite, the Cursed Rock though I have come across no explanation as to why it was cursed. A bit of lost folklore there? This card c. 1905

  17. Situated in the arc of a sharp bend in the road it is surprising that the V-shaped passage grave of Kermario in Carnac has not suffered more damage or even survived at all. This card by MTIL c. 1905 so before restoration works in the 1920s.

  18. The 6m high menhir of St-Duzec in Pleumeur-Bodou (22) is the most heavily christianised. A granite cross with crucifix was added to the top, instruments of the passion and other symbols were carved on it in 1674 and there was a painting of the crucifixion (no longer there).

  19. One folktale claims that the stones forming the alignments at Kerzerho in Erdeven (56) were carried there by fairies in a competitive show of their strength. The rows at Kerzerho would have rivalled those at Menec in Carnac but many stones have been lost.

  20. This is a very vividly hand coloured edition of Levy's card of the alignements du Moulin at St-Pierre-Quiberon (56) issued c. 1925. The negative it uses however dates from at least 1906, well before the houses that now surround them were built (mostly from the 1930s onwards).

  21. The chamber of the allee couverte on Ile-Grande in Pleumeur-Bodou (22) is 8x1.5m. but only about a metre high. It has 2 large capstones and kerbstones to support the cairn. This card by Andrieu c. 1905 when the tomb was in a cabbage field.
