For of there’s a deadline too - it’s called ‘keep your promise, do your job, fulfill your mandate & salvage your legacy’. Whatever else she may have achieved as High Commissioner, her failure to responsibly address human rights in China defines her term

In her recent interview, @mbachelet says, "There's no deadline to release the #Uyghur report." For the victims of state terror and repression, there's a deadline, it's called "survival." Starved and tortured, everyday they are horrified if they can survive concentration camps.

"Members of the UN Human Rights Council, as well as countries that have explicitly feminist foreign policies, such as Canada, France, Germany, and Sweden, have done little more than make statements of condemnation. The same is true for leaders in the Islamic world."

Dialogue and cooperation are important and legitimate ways to advance human rights where there's political will. But where violations are widespread and part of government policy, then even more vital are monitoring, reporting and accountability functions.

When asked about pressure, says she's 'under tremendous pressure from all sides'. Guess which side she's decided to ignore over the past four years: that of Uyghur, Tibetan, Hong Kong, Chinese victims.

In press conference in Geneva today, Bachelet said: "I had fully intended for it to be released before the end of my mandate, and now we have received substantial input from the govt that we will need to carefully review as we do every time with any report with any countries"

A safe, open operating environment for independent civil society and human rights organisations should be a core minimum condition for hosting #COP27 or any other major international event.

This 'all sides' or 'both sides' narrative is nonsense. This isn't some political or ideological dispute. It's about victims, their representatives and allies seeking justice and perpetrators seeking to avoid accountability for gross human rights violations.

Taliban leaders should not be able to travel freely when Afghan women are imprisoned in their homes. Do not extend the waivers. As illustrated during the pandemic, “engagement” does not require travel. Let’s hold Taliban accountable for imposing a gender apartheid.
