ALL OF THIS.

This really is no joke. People act like toxic environments in research is the price we have to pay for genius to succeed. But have we considered that there might be more success in positive work environments where everyone feels properly supported? /1 nature.com/articles/d4158

Today is happening under a layer of shoulder pain from my frozen shoulder. Steroid injection next Wednesday which should probably help. Anyone got experience of it?

VCs: Pay me hundreds of thousands of pounds. Kneel before my visionary leadership as I drive the university forward on my will alone!! Also VCs: Boo hoo, I have no power to resolve the national industrial dispute. I'm just a powerless, little weak, local branch manager person.

I can tell I'm starting to properly get my feet under the table at (8 months in) because it's getting increasingly difficult to find a time to put a meeting in with me, and I'm forever having to take myself off commercial chancer mailing lists! ๐Ÿ˜‚

The problem with front loading a lot of days in London on the week is by the time I get to Friday I'm basically like this...
Looney Tunes GIF. Sylvester cat , having been flattened, sliding down a set of stairs.

My phone now wants to use Grammarly to correct my tweets. I'm not sure I like this, the bad grammar is part of the charm, right?

Had a super busy couple of days, so many super interesting meetings about exciting projects, working with people I really like. It's always good to be brought out of the day today and be reminded what you really love doing โค๏ธ

So far my #PrideMonth2023 has consisted entirely of some company saying something vaguely supportive of LGBTQ+ folks -> massive backlash (chance to update the block list) -> company may or may not retract post. Enjoying it greatly ๐Ÿ˜ซ

Doing lots of connecting and networking with head (or only) librarians in research intensive institutes/companies/museums etc. at the moment. Wondering if we might not be better in a group rather than 1:1...Anyone know if something like this exists in the UK? #librarians

Fun times with delayed & cancelled trains back to Sheffield tonight. And I'd stay over but there are strikes tomorrow! No shade on strikers tho, the corporations need to fix stuff. Really fed up with useless travel right now.

I had several conversations about this at this year - particularly about how you can't just see the USA as homogenous regarding LGBTQ+ safety, which state you're hosting in makes a hell of a difference.

As a LGBTQIA+/queer individual, I truly feel abandoned by my professional community in terms of fight against hosting meetings in unwelcoming and openly hostile places. I'm exhausted by the demand for me to send at-risk individuals into openly hostile environments.

Yay! Also, don't forget the commercial companies trying to make a buck too! (but I'm also going to try and be less cynical this pride month)

Happy month of politicians saying platitudes about LGBTQ+ rights that theyโ€™ll be willing to contradict in a heartbeat in order to fuel the culture wars

I wasted almost half a day of research yesterday because I trusted ChatGPT's answer too much. I asked ChatGPT how to do X using the programming language Y (it is not a secret, but details are irrelevant). The answer looked quite credible and there were references to human expertsโ€ฆย Show more

Sat on train actually putting down some words for the book - particularly inspired by some of the EDI collections talks I've been to at and over the last couple of months.

Excellent moment in a meeting earlier when I saw movement in the corner of my eye and it was the cat. When I say 'the cat' I don't mean my cat, I mean the sneaky neighbourhood cat that is super keen to come into our house at all times.

Thanks USS, not only did you tank my pension but now you've lost my personal data which apparently includes "title, initial(s), and name, your date of birth, your National Insurance number, your USS member number and your retirement date". Really providing value to customers.

The name sake of the dodgy highstreet wetherspoons in the town I grew up in. Fond memories.

And I am back in the UK. The Heathrow security staff commented that I was really calm when selected for a pat down. Lack of sleep and a fatalistic attitude, I think! #TravelDisasters

This is an extremely fucking smug and self-satisfied thread. I hope you enjoy it. I hope you find it as much fun as I had this afternoon. This is how it went down. Iโ€™m on holiday, with Andrew and Julie and the kids, plus Andrewโ€™s parents. Theyโ€™re all here for the week, sadlyโ€ฆ

Distracting myself at the Natural History Museum. Love a Woodchuck, it's like a little portly dude, but the Badgers over here are just scary and wrong.

Just heard that my amazing grandmother passed away. She was 100, had an amazing life and was very ready to go. But I am stuck 3600 miles away and feel rather lost in the world right now.
