Is this “new” research? I’ve been teaching for 24 years and learned this at university, whilst training to become a teacher, and have stuck to this principle ever since!

While praise is EXTREMELY preferable over reprimanding children... what I feel is even more valuable is to help children learn to self evaluate and develop a positive and strong self-perception rather than become dependent on the praise of others.

Perhaps when teachers change their mindset - looking for the positive in children - it improves two-way relationship between each child and the teacher. Research idea: teacher not giving/speaking praise but noting it in private journal - does student behavior improve?

We were brought up on a diet of criticism. We in turn have acted this out on younger generations and the effect is one of demoralization. How we talk about challenges with our kids must be turned on its head. Time to change.

That’s what I did as a teacher and the bad behavior increased for a short time, but I ignored the bad and praised the good. It wasn’t long until the bad was extinguished and the good prevailed. I taught eighth graders. This made my classroom much more pleasant.
