One weird fact about Arthurian movie adaptations is there are nowhere near as many good ones as there should be.
That's part of why we're gonna do this every five or ten years until someone gets it right. An Arthurian backdrop could sustain an entire movie genre on the scale of, say, jidaigeki, and accommodate all sorts of generic experiments. Instead there's like, three good movies.
Strangely underserved niche, to be sure!
Arthurian material is so varied and rich that you could tell all kinds of different stories against that backdrop if we'd established it as a tried and true framework for making good movies, but we really haven't!
Most people trying to adapt it get distracted by the 12th century French romance stuff and ignore the weird, Celtic shit like the Green Knight or Merlin tripping balls on dragon visions. They should adapt Mary Stewart's books.
I think there's plenty of enjoyable weirdness in the twelfth century French romances and also that these categories are more porous/problematic than you might think!
