Rep. Peter Merideth’s Tweets

It was a remarkable illustration of their fear of even hearing about the history of racism. Because a black rep began talking about the history of white legislators removing local control from black communities (like this bill), he was cut off, and all other black reps silenced.

Republican cut off debate when a black Rep was up to talk. Theirs were 3 other black Reps stand to speak including myself and the floor leader ended the debate completely. It's a shame that we were discussing a bill about St. Louis and they silenced the voices of those Reps.

Every MO R voted that children can carry guns in public. They voted to defund police if a cop helps stop a fed gun crime. They voted to ban a 12 year old rape victim with major health risks from having an abortion. Bills to ban mentioning racism or LGBT issues, ban drag.……

Kids carrying guns on the street or in a park is a matter of individual freedom and personal responsibility. Kids seeing a drag queen read a children’s book or sing a song is a danger the government must ban. Do I have that right MO GOP? #moleg

That’s right. I choose not to own a gun so I can’t have opinions about gun laws. They CAN’T get pregnant but certainly don’t mind passing laws about pregnancy. And I bet most of them don’t know much about drugs but are happy to throw people in prison for those every day, too.

Republican #moleg men: "Democrats don't understand guns so shouldn't be legislating them!!" Also #moleg Republican men: "What does trans mean? What's an ectopic pregnancy? Let's legislate it anyway!"

Right now Republicans in the MO House are fighting against an amendment that would say children can’t carry guns in public. (Yep it’s legal right now.) They’re saying it would violate the 2nd amendment to deny a 12 yr old the right to carry an AR-15 down the street. #moleg

And yet how many proposals our governor celebrated in his state of the state are thanks to bills passed by Biden and the Dems? Infrastructure, broadband, CHIPS, and so much more! And celebrating the lowest unemployment rate in our history… under Biden’s “disastrous policies.” 🙄

Biden’s dispatch from fantasy land tonight will fall on deaf ears in middle America, where Missourians are facing the real impact of Biden’s disastrous policies.

ICYMI The MO Senate today is spending their day debating a bill to censor schools’ teaching of the history of racism in America. Today is the first day of Black History Month. Yep, that tracks.

With a single tweet, Missouri Senate President Pro Tem Caleb Rowden turned a local controversy over what Columbia Public Schools told parents about the drag performance at a diversity breakfast into a state issue. #moleg #mogov #mosen via @RudiKellerMI missouriindependent.com/2023/01/31/mis

The amount of foolishness we’re hearing in this tax cmte about bills to get rid of the state corp tax is mind blowing. The truth is this would be a billion dollar corp giveaway that does nothing for small biz or regular people. Taking more $ from schools, infrastructure, etc.

A 16yo in MO can get thrown in prison for walking down the street with a joint, while police can’t even arrest them for walking down the street with an AR-15 or handgun. Because freedom.

Not a single person here to testify in support of these ridiculous drag ban bills. Not one. But a room full of drag queens and advocates to fight them. i guess the GOP legislators really just wanted an after midnight drag show in the Capitol? 🤷🏼‍♂️

These parents are who will beat this hateful stuff. The legislators seem to hear their ferocious love of their kids. Their internal struggles and journeys. They can relate to being a parent who loves their kid.

I just have to hope these Republicans are seeing this contrast. Who do you want to be on the side of? Pleading parents, kids, their doctors, and the overwhelming opinions of the medical community — or conspiracy theorists that want big gov to say we know better than all of them.

Followed by a woman ranting about woke ideology and every medical association being a part of a vast woke conspiracy, and demanding government ban parents like Dan from supporting their kid and listening to him and to the advice of medical experts.

Well that testimony just about shut down the room. Dan’s father getting emotional and expressing the ferocious love of a parent trying to take care of his kid to politicians trying to stop him. Then Dan simply asking, “Please stop.” Folks from all sides crying. They heard that.

Oof. Again this year the bill sponsors of the government ban on parents, kids and doctors choosing gender affirming care begin by repeating lies about a Swedish study that even the study’s author has debunked. And lies about European laws. I had to explain this yet again. 😒

A witness just nailed the point. LGBTQ kids experience suicides and bullying at horrifying rates. GOP priority is making it worse in the name of “protecting girls” from playing sports with 6 trans girls. How about we protect the vulnerable kids instead of bullying them more?

Mayor is a leader I hope to see more and more of in this state. Grateful he was here lending his voice and representing KC not just in efforts to address violent crime, but also standing up against political bullies - and fighting for a state that welcomes all.

Again with the bill sponsor saying “this bill has nothing to do with LGBT youth” and having to be reminded that ”the T is for trans. This bill is about trans kids playing sports.”

First hearing of the year now for this new committee on tax policy… and the bill sponsor starts off repeating the nonsensical claim that lowering state taxes is causing revenue to go up. He cited the Laffer Curve. Seems they always forget the “curve” part.

Just heard the budget request for the big proposal for semiconductor research and development “right here in MO” that the Governor touted in his state of the state. Turns out it’s a federal program funded by Biden’s CHIPS Act. GOP taking credit while decrying fed spending. 🙄

Notably they notified the public of this hearing barely the required 24hrs in advance and on a day with a winter storm warning already. Clearly doing their best to make it harder for advocates to get here.

ALERT: Anti LGBTQ bills being heard tomorrow. Bills to take away freedom to access to gender affirming health care, to legislate kids’ sports and bully trans kids, and to attack drag shows. Big government at its worst — and trying to limit public participation in the process.

Upgrades to interstates may be popular and needed to, but we should be leveraging as much federal money for those projects as possible (since they serve folks just crossing our state), and shouldn’t take priority over public transit, esp after decades of investment in sprawl.

Last year I proposed money to increase public transit spending statewide (ours is ridiculously low compared to other states), a north-south metro expansion, and statewide fare-free public transit. I also support overdue upgrades/repairs to roads and bridges.

I didn’t actually stand up for this one. I’m glad to see real infrastructure investment, but not sure it’s the best use of state dollars (not fed). Really wish we’d consider a serious investment in public transit. Just $50mil /year would get rid of all fares on existing systems…

We funded decent increases to most of these things last year, but they were still less than inflation - so increases were ultimately more cuts. The state of our state in MO is that we’re behind. It’s time we finally start investing again in the things that grow our state. 3/3

We still have the lowest paid teachers and state workers in the country, the lowest state funding for K-12 in the country, have made huge cuts in higher education funding in the past 10 years, and I could go on and on. 2/x

As we prepare for the state of the state tomorrow, this passage from a budget request by the Department of Higher Ed and Workforce Development this year jumped out at me. MO is basically at the bottom of our peer states by most economic indicators. 1/x

Um, no, Twitter. The amendment made the dress code stricter, ensuring women that had previously worn long sleeve dresses without a blazer would have to wear a blazer. An amendment to THAT amendment expanded to allow cardigans. If you’re gonna fact check me, use facts.

Very glad to see the Governor’s proposed 8.7% pay raises for state workers. It’s an absolutely necessary start, but honestly doesn’t even catch them up to inflation. With the lowest paid state workers in the nation, I hope we can do much more to support (and keep) them this year.

Apparently having agents to enforce laws is government working “against us.” I guess that’s true if you are trying to break the law and avoid paying your fair share. Maybe like their president that avoided a required tax audit because the IRS “didn’t have the resources.”
Quote Tweet
🚨 House Republicans just voted unanimously to repeal the Democrats' army of 87,000 IRS agents 🚨 This was our very first act of the new Congress, because government should work for you, not against you. Promises made. Promises kept.

When it comes to opposing the concentration of power in the hands of a few (speaker, floor leader and budget chair), it seems many on the far right agree with us. It’s time we decentralize power in our gov and put it back in the hands of the people, esp in the “People’s House.”

Yep, the caucus that lost their minds over the suggestion that they should wear masks during a pandemic to respect the safety of others is now spending its time focusing on the fine details of what women have to wear (specifically how to cover their arms) to show respect here.

Last year while we were being sworn in we were getting national headline alerts about the active insurrection. This time we’re getting national headlines about disarray in House leadership elections. Definitely prefer these.
