  5. Well done both govts for getting this done fast - discontinuity would’ve been v damaging to growing commercial links. So much else for new partnership to work on - Syria, refugees, Cyprus, , Iran, economic policy, reform programme. .

    Devastating news: David Barchard, one of the leading scholars on Turkey, who loved Turkey more than anything, and who introduced me to journalism, passed away at his cottage in Yorkshire this evening. He was a brilliant writer and a loyal friend. Gutted.

    So says that the deal he has negotiation will "if anything" allow UK businesses to do "even more" trade with the European Union. I think fair to say that is an optimistic view of where industry sees it.

    German ambassador wonders why boasts that a German/US vaccine represents the "UK leading the charge" against Covid19. He argues this is not a moment for nationalist sentiment, and doesn't bother to challenge the questionable assertion this is a UK achievement.
