When I was working on my quantum algorithm for factorization, I didn't tell anybody, because it seemed like such a long shot. Similarly, Wiles didn't tell anybody that he was working on Fermat's Last Theorem before he solved it, presumably for the same reason.

One could have the best of both worlds. Let individuals worry away in private, but also organize collective projects for people who are willing to trade personal glory for a greater chance of success. I think that how best to organize a "Manhattan project" is a v interesting q.

Working secretly alone has various advantages to the individuals as well as for mathematics as a whole. (It often increases the chances of success, again both for individuals and for the community.) Polymath of various kinds are fun&interesting but (like QC :) ) are not superior.

That is true what if someone is close to solving it but unfortunately kicks the bucket and dies? Their work will be wasted.

Playing devil's advocate: - knowing that the glory in case of success will be shared could drastically reduce enthusiasm of individuals - 9 women can't make a baby in a month (communication could add friction and time waste)

devil's advocate again: If I remember correctly, there was a Polymath Project aimed at solving the Sensitivity Conjecture, but then Hao Huang single-handedly smashed it. I don't know how much he benefitted of the partial results coming from the Polymath Project though

I feel like there's an analogy to how negative results in science don't get love. If there were a bit less pressure to be working on the "right" problems and it was a bit more common to talk about things that aren't quite "results" yet folks might share more

An interesting example was a polymath project, which Maynard “beat” working alone. But when they joined forces, more progress was made.https://www.quantamagazine.org/mathematicians-team-up-on-twin-primes-conjecture-20131119/ …
