  2. I’ll be on later this afternoon, just past 4:00, chatting with Joe about my book Bad Data, and all the ways that trying to measure everything can lead us in the wrong direction. Thanks for the chat Joe! Great conversation.

  4. This is the greatest challenge facing Calgary. I spoke to about this late last year for the road ahead series. If we cannot attract labour, we are going to suffer. We need to seriously think about what that takes.

As we've been going about our discussions on 's education curriculum, I've been asking myself a really simple question: how would I feel as a parent? Would I want or need a year-end standardized test for young child? And I keep coming back to the answer being "no."

When I wrote Bad Data, I had an inkling of the deeper motivations behind metrics and why they often fail us. I stumbled upon this article by and it gave a lot of clarity to my ideas. Read it. Goodhart's Law and Why Measurement is Hard

If you have a podcast, book club or any other social media, spread the word there. You can also write about it in your diary. That doesn’t help as much, even though it’s important. Start talking about bad data with your colleagues.

If you’ve read it, write a review on Amazon or Good Reads. It really helps with exposure. Tell your friends, colleagues and random people at the grocery store about it. Buy multiple copies for different rooms in your home. Every bit helps.

I started writing Bad Data over 7 years ago. It’s been a long journey, and I’m so excited to see it in real life. It feels surreal, but good. It’s one of the top books on research in Amazon! Some ways you can help me celebrate:

Great points in this article. Also useful to ask if our metrics account for the skills our future requires. Are critical thinking skills reflected in tests, or in workplace hiring practices? What other skills do we undervalue because we can’t measure them?

How do you say it? Data - (day-tuh) Data - (dah-tuh) Either way, if it's Bad Data why do we use it? That's the subject of a new book by author .
