Didnt they do that with the SIMS 3 mouse? It did shine in diffrent colors depending on your sims mood?

It would be neat to adjust the currents within it as well. Like a color-changing lava lamp.

You could make the lights tiny, put them into a uniform grid, and use them to display images

If you arrange a matrix of red green and blue LEDs inside the configuration you could display different colours
