If the world is embedded on a sphere (or any other shape without endpoints), you can have it shrink while maintaining irs topology. Imagine a toroidal game world, where you see faraway lands come crashing down towards you as the "donut hole" shrinks.

Maybe the world has two towers that have been there since time immemorial. They're equidistant, so people think they're antipodes, but really, they're facing each other. What will happen when they meet? Are they the cause of the world's shrinkage? Magnets, how do they work?
