The Republican base killed immigration reform TWICE in 2005 and 2007 ... but sure, Romney's Trump endorsement is what made anti-immigrant racism normal in the GOP. OK.

Side note, I covered the Mitt/Trump endorsement in Vegas at the time. Trump was just wandering about the lobby alone desperately looking for reporters to talk to him. He was like the human form of a faxed press release that no one wanted to read.

He certainly didn’t tamp it down when he had the opportunity.

This is very true-but as much as I appreciate Sen Romney as a man and as much as I think he'd have been an exceptional president, the fact that everyone on every side holds him up as an icon of what is good or bad whenever they want is perfectly appropriate. Chameleons chameleon.

And Mr. Trump was on MSNBC, on Morning Joe. His appearances and call ins led me to stop watching their show for a while. People gave him air time for the media impact only, bc they didn't see him as a serious contender. In so doing, Mr. Trump had his profile raised.

There was a reason: the birther base viewed Trump as a hero. People forget Trump led very early GOP primary polling in the 2012 cycle.

I'm old enough to remember John McCain clearly and forcefully rejecting this wing of the Republican Party on a national stage instead of rubbing its paw.
