Thank you for being willing to address climate change. Yes, human-caused climate change is real. I recommend this excellent book: “The Ends of the World” by that talks about the big (half-billion years) picture of climate change.

  12. It’s a shame to see field biology and natural history decline in prominence at universities. I don’t have much profound to say about this trend other than that we know very little about the world around us, we are in the midst of a biodiversity crisis, and this isn’t helping.

  13. Geology has done more than any field to help me comprehend the gravity of the climate crisis. And much of what we know about our harrowing future comes from studying Earth's past. Dismayingly, geologists also play a vital role in enabling that crisis.

  14. Most climate policies that people on this website pitch as more "centrist" and "pragmatic" would guarantee that coral reefs as an ecosystem are doomed within decades. There have been 5 reef collapses in earth history.

  15. My interpretation of this cartoon is that the dimetrodon on the right--which didn't coexist w/ dinosaurs and went extinct 210 million years before the "comet" hit--is actually speaking to the T-Rex as a ghost from deep time and this is in fact a very strange & unsettling cartoon

  21. It really is difficult to overstate how apocalyptic this ancient mass extinction was. Here's a figure from a paper out today-- Life just goes off a cliff at the end of the Permian period.
