Gaming can be a tricky issue for parents (and people in general) because bubbling under those screentime questions are things like:
- Are the kids alright?
- Am I a good parent?
- What is good life?
...which are somewhat more complex.

Reminder that Descartes thought that you had tiny particles in your bloodstream that, when they got to the pineal gland, turned into animal spirits
Quote Tweet
In 1638, Descartes wrote a letter to Mersenne in which he savagely reviews Galileo's book Discourses and Mathematical Demonstrations Concerning
Two New Sciences. He ends with some potshots in which he declares that Galileo's work isn't worth taking credit for.
So glad the auto captions are working while I'm livestreaming to students...

Press coverage of a social science study of social media with: (a) mixed results, (b) links to the full report with detailed methodology, and (c) raw data [eventually] accessible? 🤯
This constellation is rare from academics and should be applauded for transparency here.

Cool study by @Meta & @Gallup researchers here and the microdata (i.e. raw-ish data) will be available to independent scientists early next year. Keep up the good work @nickclegg!

This new study from @Gallup helps us understand the nature and value of people’s connections around the world. It’s good to see that social media has played a role in helping people stay connected, not least during a global pandemic.

There is a (modest) role for citation metrics in analysis of research, but it is now trivial to publish empty papers every day citing all your prior papers to render citation counts meaningless.
Making gaming strategies like this visible is a first step to address the problem.

Woke up to the news this morning that our local soft play is at risk of closure to make way for a gym. I think the landlord’s about to find out what happens when you provide a focal point for the banked-up frustrations of a thousand sleep-deprived parents.
