Honestly, this is one of the (few) cultural distinctions I see often b/w scientists and engineers. Scientists often caution against making statements that can’t withstand high levels of scrutiny. Engineers must make a judgment call, and accept imperfect evidence to increase odds

FTR, there are plenty of occasions when lack of rigor causes problems for engineers. But, time isn’t on our side here, and the old status quo (no masks for public) has a high cost associated with it.
