And how much this erodes the general quality of literature and diminishes the writing art you can't believe. Cuz writing a novel is a capital intensive project that requires a sustained amount of stability to write, & privilege/connections to get anything from.

I was telling someone how most of sci-fi is based around philosophy. That in reimagining the current world or the future, authors review the existing systems, follow a “what if things worked like this instead” proposal to see where it leads them.

Oh and I have written a novel (unpublished). I think it's pretty damned amazing too. Even for me. But I don't think it's the most important thing I have written or can write. I favour a more rounded approach to literature. I want to make plays, graphic novels, everything.

Because language & words matter. They create & erase. If you don't get this, you're in the wrong business. Making a list of "books" that has only one thing pushes the idea that only that one thing matters & defines the whole. It erases the rest

Now I'll conclude where I started. You might not have the resources or expertise to start a publishing company & change the trajectory of story lengths & forms. But If you're making a list of books & it contains only novels, call it a list of novels or whatever the list contains

And while we are talking about prose fiction here, the comic book adaptations and comic book companies prove that you can tell viable, sustainable stories that are engaged with commercially, & even work as adaptations, if you bother to try enough.

A lot of your fav films were also adapted from shorter stories, not novels. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Shawshank Redemption, Million Dollar Baby, Minority Report, Sleepy Hollow, I Am Legend, you could go on & on, & find as many shirts adapted successfully as novels

These days, hardly any prose fiction works will get picked up for publishing or adaptation if it's not a novel. Meanwhile a lot of your favourite works of literature are not even novels. And you don't realize. Mariama Ba's So Long a Letter, Animal Farm, The Old Man & The Sea

It's the same argument for diversity. You want all the different voices, like you want all the different groups of people working at solving the world's problems & developing it. When you limit your literature to one form that's out of reach of most people, that ain't happening.

It's like leaving your whole body and developing only one wrist. It's silly. People listen to songs, watch film/tv, read far more than they listen to lectures or pay attention in school. The benefits of developing all your art forms & types can't be overemphasized.

Doesnt matter if you are Shakespeare rose from the dead to reinvent English literature. I don't mean literary superstar or great writer. They might not take Soyinka's or Charles Dickens returned from the grave's non novel now. By superstar I mean Beyonce, Lil Wayne etc
