In the New Yorker, Junot Díaz told us how he moved through phases of ‘hurting women’ as a result of his own considerable, awful trauma. But trauma is no excuse for misogyny. Women should not have to suffer so that you can heal. When do we get to heal?

I’m curious...what does “treatment for misogyny” look like, do you think?

I didn't feel he was prescribing hurting women as a cure but describing the damage he did as a result of his own. If men like him aren't honest, self-reflective and take action to heal themselves there's no hope.

I admire his writing so much, but I do feel- especially based on today’s revelations- that he was preemptively making excuses for his own behaviour.

Come on!! being raped as an 8-year old is serious. Violence in childhood is one of the mechanisms of violence reproduction.

No human being is perfect, people make mistakes, every man deals with some sort of baggage with women I think. You just hope you can evolve to not project your shit, be bitter or indeed be truly mysoginist. But I'd say every man has probably been sexist at some point.

On a personal note I have bipolar1 which means that my anger and despair can sometimes be aimed at women as well as men. Not proud of that but it's true . Really I think all we can do as men is be honest and try and be better. Boundaries become important at a point. Being vague..

there is enough room for everyone to heal, men and women alike. Diaz spoke truth to his trauma and named the ways his trauma manifested in extremely bad behavior. Thats what untreated trauma can look like. One person's pain doesn't have to outshine another.

No one is saying that one persons pain should outshine another, instead OP seems to be saying that it's wrong for people to use their own pain as an excuse to inflict pain on others. My dad was abused as a child. That doesn't excuse the way he abused me when I was a child.
