So - now @linuxfoundation is allowing people to call things 'Linux' that have 0 Linux code in them and only run on Windows. Seems like the kind of things that @BryanLunduke might be interested in writing about.https://twitter.com/PengwinLinux/status/1043596996563673088 …

Linux Foundation has not "endorsed" WLinux, it has merely authorized a trademark sublicense, see https://www.linuxmark.org/programs/legal/trademark/sublicense-agreement …. The WLinux image does contain a Linux kernel but that kernel is not initiated when used with WSL. I would be happy to answer any other questions you have.

WSL is a translation later that executes Linux ELFs on Windows by translating the Linux syscalls into Windows kernel syscalls. It is not a VM or emulator, it is closer to the Wine project. I link to more articles on the tech here:https://github.com/sirredbeard/Awesome-WSL …

You could use kernel sources on WSL to compile a kernel for another device if needed. It also needs to be there so any clones you bootstrap from WLinux will also be self-hosting/bootable in various environment WSL, KVM, AWS, metal, etc.

When you run WLinux or any distro on WSL, either from the store or built and sideloaded yourself, the Linux kernel is not executed. The kernel is present in the image WSL "mounts" but it is not running.
