Very excited in getting the first snapshots of underwater videos recorded by guanay cormorants in Peru. This is part of a project that our Research Unit is undertaken: Seabirds as Sentinels of the Sea: measuring the interactions with the Peruvian fisheries.

Controlling our desire for more, learning to live within realistic limits, is not only in our own interest. It’s also necessary if we are to overcome the challenges to life on Earth that our incessant quest for more generates—since the material resources of this planet are finite

Seabird ecologists wear mud, bird crap, fish-filled vomit and pungent stomach oils over everything. Seems I can only find photos of mud and poo though! should get on this.

The first tawaki has returned to Milford Sound from its pre-moult journey to the subantarctic. It's so fat, it can hardly walk. Perfect condition for 3 weeks of fasting while growing a whole new set of feathers.

Good co-authors are few and far between. When you find one: NEVER. LET. GO. Nurture that relationship like you would a childhood friendship. It's worth its weight in gold.

Some of the most bitter disputes in academia relate to authorship. Who is on the paper? What is the author order? What are the personal politics involved? Ideally discuss authorship at the start of the project. If this feels uncomfortable it's a sign of potential problems ahead.

shows how our culturally significant relationship with summer (mainly, south of the tropics) is being reconfigured under climate change; a time of relaxation, leisure and refreshment at beach or in bush is being replaced with menace, vigilance and anxiety. 2/8
