Disclaimer: I have not verified the claims in the article, which is mainstream journalism, which is wrong every time it covers any subject of which I have direct knowledge. I have no idea if Uber actually committed homicide, but the journalist-alleged software would be that.

Released a new analysis showing that compute for landmark AI models from before 2012 grew at exactly Moore's Law. From 2012-2018, every 1.5 years compute grew the amount that used to take a decade. Deep learning is 60, not 6, years of steady progress:

One of the many awful things about watching someone you love struggle with Alzheimer’s is the feeling of helplessness. You keep thinking that there must be something more you can do. Here's one option.

San Francisco had a city budget of $12.2 billion this year, which is more than the GDP of 51 countries. Its ideal city budget might be higher, but when we achieve so astoundingly little with the first $12billion it becomes hard to see what the next $12billion will do.

I want to read a book that explores odd/extreme cultural norms across time and location - like variations in coming of age, death, and marriage rituals, gender norms, war norms, labor norms. Any recommendations for something that's well researched and avoids sensationalism?

Lots of cultural norms have changed over history (divorce, gay people, hygiene) after being hotly contested. What are some norms that have remained surprisingly stable over history despite being hotly contested?

Most people describe our current western society as "capitalistic." How far back in time do you have to go before "capitalistic" no longer applies to western society?

New ep! Philosopher of mind is one of the leading proponents of "illusionism," the theory that argues that your subjective experience -- i.e., the "what it is like" to be you -- is a trick of the mind.

i get this feeling of being like... constipated and angry at the same time when around people who've gone through any formal philosophy, you can't get through a single idea without them dropping eight different philosophers on you, and im just like YES BUT WHAT DO YOU THINK

Just me or is philosophy actually a complete shitshow? When I was younger I really wanted to major in philosophy because I thought it was "learning to think real good about abstract stuff", but eventually found out it was "quoting other famous people's stuff at each other"
