Biomusings is (a)live! I *finally* released the project I've been preparing for several months. It is about all things biological. Check it out here: Follow here: It is in English & Español ;) DM if you want to write in it!

  2. I wrote an opinion piece for Scientific American , addressed to aspiring (or early-stage) PhD STEM students. I'd say good mentor(s) + self-care are the key. Finding/developing these are fundamental. 👩🏽‍🔬👨🏿‍🔬

What makes life so hard to understand? I spoke with Eric Smith (Prof. ) about Schrödinger's "aperiodic crystal", the categories of "alive" and "dead", and the need to further our scientific dialogue in biology.

What's happening here (in Physics) should be relevant to all other sciences with a "theoretical" component and to philosophy of science. In theoretical biology, we always want to immediately 'see' how theory relates to reality. But is tricky to tell what is the relevant 'theory'!

The funding system isn’t broken because it produces flawed science. The funding system is broken because it prevents even better science from happening!

many modern "holists" are biologists, I presume because like in no other science, biological problems require explanations at many levels, simultaneously. This suggests that causality flows across levels, in all directions! A new wave of biologists deserve special... 4/6

Individual actions (going vegan, flying less, etc) are insufficient if nothing changes at higher levels of organization. Yet, the idea that all phenomena can be reduced to explanations at lower levels (atoms/fields in physics, biomolecules/genes in biology) pervades all... 2/6

2020 is a good year to talk more about reductionism and how it affects the way we (mis)understand complex systems (esp. living and social systems). Climate change is a relevant example of why reductionism is inappropriate/insufficient to understand/change a complex system. 1/6
