I bought the PC version, with the Stupid Ass copy protection thing, that I doubt would work on a modern PC at all.

Don't remind me; there was an issue with the "protection" killing the game, so M$ had to send us a crack for the protection (before it was released) to help diagnose the problem. I'll be having nightmares about that now!

-
I recall it locked the PC up for a while at the start of one of the levels. I wonder if GoG have a DRM free version of the game...
-
You raise a good point, all the CD Rom device driver madness that the copy protection used will most certainly implode on modern kit. Not seen it running in, like, 18 years... Bet it hasn't aged!
-
Supposedly the DRM doesn't work in Windows 10 due to security fixes (heh...) but I've had luck with installing old games with that sort of thing lately so I dunno. Cross your fingers and/or crack it I guess?https://pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/StarLancer#cite_note-3 …
-
There was a generic crack for the protection available before we shipped! The only reason it had protection was to do with the German market; in order to recognise M$' copyright they had to show that they had attempted to protect their copyright, even if the protection was pants!
-
...huh! What a weird reason. I wonder how much truth was behind it...
-
Oh it's 100% correct - quite a few publishers had the same policy. If you didn't try to enforce and protect your copyright, it would be hard to defend. Utter nuts.

I also described the awesomeness of Starlancer here: http://www.thedreamcastjunkyard.co.uk/2015/03/the-stars-my-destination.html …
-
D'aaaaw shucks. Cheers! Shame about the Gamespy matchmaking stuff going down - the multiplayer game itself was totally self sufficient with one client acting as client and server - if they bailed out the server would migrate to another client.

Still enjoyed online by a dedicated few DC players!
-
I believe so... Was amazed and humbled when I heard that

-
I only tried this recently and still keep meaning to go back to it as really liked what I played. There is a PC version in a charity shop near me too that I keep considering buying as my Dreamcast copy was disc only!
-
I had the PC version (and Freelancer - which remains an all time favourite), but the DC version looks excellent and plays really well. Beats the space-combat rivals on the DC easily (as Tom pointed out in his roundup on the Junkyard)

It would be really cool if you could share *how* you pulled off that networking - there are a few Dreamcast devs out there ;)
-
Don't want to be a modern day version of Fermat; "there isn't enough room in a tweet", and indeed the network framework code was written by another programmer on the team (of three!), but it was pretty simple really - maybe one for a blog post...
-
A blog post would be most excellent!
