Here goes nothing; my newly updated (work in progress) website. Lots of modern and retro game development goodness, with new goodies being added weekly. After three decades of game coding, I thought I'd start giving a little back. Be gentle!

Finally, I have a moment to breathe! To all the lovely people that have sent me DMs and emails over the last couple of weeks - I'm on them, right about now... Apologies for the delays in my usual service - Old Paulie will be back momentarily!

Just finished implementing importance sampling of anisotropic microfacet BRDF, including Backmann, GGX and Blinn, in my renderer. Apart from the implementation, I also posted a blog that shows the full derivation of all importance sampling method.

This is great! Datasets drive research; having a modern production asset in hackable form is going to pay dividends.

Just reminiscing about graphical breakthroughs in games. I remember sitting at a friend's house playing Bug Byte's Spectres, a PacMan clone, on the 16K Spectrum circa '82, and my mate's amazement at the ghosts being, like, properly "see through" (aka XORed over each other!) 🤪

If you enjoyed my post last week about compute shaders, you'll probably enjoy this deep dive on SIMD execution, scalar optimization, latency, throughput, scheduling, and more:

Anybody been getting Linked In requests from "International Researchers" recently? It seems to be a new strapline for "I'm a recruiter, but I don't want you to notice that in the short form version of my profile"... Sigh...

Such a shocking statistic. If you are having a clear-out at home, we would love to welcome your old books into our Forgotten Library, where we will find them a new home with the children and families of Rotherham.

Chatting with an old colleague that left a major developer a while back (being purposefully vague here) - but had worked out in their 11 years at the studio they'd worked 13 years in terms of hours put in (uncompensated). And they say there isn't a crunch culture. Poppycock.
