The analogy here with HIV by @zeynep is quite compelling -- specifically that most HIV-related deaths occurred *after* we had effective ART. The same might be true about Covid and effective vaccines, unless distribution rapidly improves.https://www.theinsight.org/p/we-need-to-get-real-about-how-the?token=eyJ1c2VyX2lkIjoxOTY2MTIxLCJwb3N0X2lkIjozNjk1MzQ5OCwiXyI6ImlLeHJaIiwiaWF0IjoxNjIyMjQzNzU1LCJleHAiOjE2MjIyNDczNTUsImlzcyI6InB1Yi0xMTg0Iiwic3ViIjoicG9zdC1yZWFjdGlvbiJ9.S1IzDV35qF9HgtPhsTI31d11ze0mxQ-TCQSk95142Vc …

So my father got his second dose of Covaxin on 6th April and died of Covid on 25th April. He was co-morbid (hypertension and diabetes + brain stroke in 2016). Are there any studies on this phenomenon? I mean this shouldn't have happened, right? I am looking for explanations.

I agree that the curves may do something similar BUT the curves should be DRAMTICALLY foreshortened- it took decades to get cART to those countries and we already have nearly 1.8 billion vaccines given- this will end quicker by my tea leaves regardless of variants

Exponential is hard. The counties that have not ramped up vaccine delivery yet (wealthy countries hogging them) need to up their mask game. They should make better washable masks domestically and keep them on in more mixing=indoors settings. The HIV ref cont'd: masks == condoms

At the very least, we (all nations) "should" be able to relatively quickly vaccinate the most vulnerable populations in all countries, which would prevent untold numbers of deaths as well as ease the burdens on hospitals and heath care systems until the less vulnerable can be 💉

Not mentioned in article but Bill Gates foundation also intervened at a critical point when pharmaceuticals were clear they'd save millions of Africans & Asians lives only IF they got paid royalties for the HIV meds. Hopefully covid can find a benefactor billionaire too?

AIDS analogy needs to factor in access, availability & affordability (3 A's) in these countries.Which drove fatalities Rather than specific 'runaway' sets of immune escape variants/sub lineages, post ARVs Right now we have a double whammy Rapidly mutating Variants & 3 A's

Is this rise in cases a function of risk homeostasis?
