My article on "Sustainable Intensification" (SI) of agriculture is up at @ensiamedia: https://ensia.com/features/sustainable-intensification/ … SI is based on 4 basic premises:

        1. We need to produce more food to feed a growing population (Image source: https://www.businessinsider.com/un-world-population-projections-2015-7 …)pic.twitter.com/SV0pqr62Xp

        2. We should increase production by getting more out of existing farmland (increase yields) so we don't have to convert more wild land to farms. We need to *decouple* food production from land use. (Image source: https://www.ocl-journal.org/articles/ocl/pdf/2018/01/ocl170039.pdf …)pic.twitter.com/Qp0zu91qO0

        3. Environmental sustainability is just as important as increasing production. In addition to habitat loss, we need to address N & P runoff, GHG emissions, and other ag-related environmental issues. 4. All technologies and practices are on the table. The focus is on positive outcomes: more food on less land with less of an adverse impact on the environment.

But SI can't do it alone. How we farm is only one part of a sustainable food system. The more we do to change diets, limit food waste, and reduce population growth, the easier it will be to feed a growing population sustainably. Thanks for tagging me! Great piece. Seems like such a monumental challenge — growing more with less while also conserving land — but a critical one.
