Rowley says police had intelligence that people were going to use rape alarms, loud hailers and paint to disrupt coronation, scare horses and vandalise monuments. He says such was the seriousness that Home Sec and Mayor of London were briefed late on Friday night.

Rowley clearly cross at coverage. “Much of the ill-informed commentary on the day is wholly inaccurate - for example protest was not banned. I want to be absolutely clear - our activity was targeted at those we believed were intent on causing serious disruption and criminality”.

NEW: Met Commissioner Mark Rowley has defended officers who arrested protestors on Sat. “As I would expect the arresting officers were vigilant, curious, and proactive. They formed the 'reasonable suspicion' necessary to arrest

Conservative MP David Davis, who voted against the government’s Public Order Act, says there is a problem both with the law itself and the interpretation of it. He wants the Home Affairs Committee to examine the law and help chiefs of police understand its application.

“I think it is the right legislation” he says, in regard to the govt’s Public Order Act, which the Met has says it was applying at the time. He stresses that the police are operationally independent of government. In other words, ‘this one’s on the Met to explain.’

The government remains supportive of the Met Police this morning. “They make really difficult decisions in a split second” says government minister Neil O’Brien. “Doubtless mistakes will be made but overall I think the police did a very good job”.

UPDATE: The Met has clarified that it is not saying it regrets making the arrests. What the statement says is
“We regret that those six people arrested were unable to join the wider group of protesters in Trafalgar Square and elsewhere on the procession route.” Clear?

This isn’t really about the coronation now. Take out the specific subject of the protest (monarchy) and replace with an issue you care about. Would you expect to be arrested for having a placard with your favoured slogan on it? Serious Qs for principle of policing by consent.

It’ll be interesting to see how this develops politically tomorrow. PM expressed his support for police today and expect that won’t radically change, given govt passed the laws in question. But Labour have been careful not to criticise police during coronation. Will that change?

There have been concerns about new police powers to stop ‘disruptive’ protests, but what the Met seem to be admitting here is a serious failure in the application/interpretation of that law. The force will now face questions about why officers were quite so quick/eager to arrest.

Serious questions for the Metropolitan Police tonight which has now expressed “regret” over arresting six anti-monarchy protestors. The force concedes there was no evidence that they planned to use disruptive techniques and no charges will be brought.

Well that was a long and wet day! But quite the experience. Whatever your views of today’s coronation, for many it was a moment of competence and celebration. The likes of which Britain has seldom enjoyed in recent, troubled years. #coronation

Lots of pouring over exact vote shares and projected outcomes in a general election, but what today gives Labour is momentum. These sort of results restore much of the morale which the party leached in recent years. That matters in terms of motivating troops & setting narrative.

NEW: Labour are briefing this morning that the overnight gains they’ve made in places like Plymouth and Stoke on Trent mean they are ‘on track to win the next general election’. “We would win a majority government” they project, with an 8% lead in the vote share.
