In November 1987 I was with the camera crews in the Kremlin room where Hawke shook hands with the Soviet leader at his meeting with Gorbachev. Hawke then flew to Washington and told Reagan he thought the Russian was the real deal. Vale a giant of the 20th century.

That there are people, some supposedly serious people, acting like what Morrison did is no biggie is why we need more scholarly understanding of Australian political institutions, party systems and political culture in schools & universities. And seemingly amongst politicians…
