Do these people truly not get that a large part of historical, fantasy or science fictional world building is giving you hints of a larger world, scaffolding to support the notion that a world exists outside the confines of a plot?

I mean, Romulan ale is a fun background detail that adds a bit of color but I really don't need to learn the fictional history of the development of brewing on Romulus.

I just imagined Luke’s Dad and Old Ben hacking down clones that looked doofy and that was all I needed in 1977, and the “real” story ended up being way more boring.

Yeah, it's weird that "clone war" didn't make me think of people looking identical to each other; my mind went straight to Cronenberg-looking lab accidents (not that I had any idea who Cronenberg was then).
