Yet that is what the majority of us have to do. Sick days and vacation in one pot - you must accrue the time off versus starting the year with a set number of vacation days and the ability to call out sick if needed without punishment or financial hardship
Businesses represent only their own very narrow interests. Representative govt. is supposed to represent everyone (though of course it often falls short, but we keep trying). Most nations have strong social safety nets. Why shouldn't the US?

You also need to expand the definition of family on #FMLA. I was denied when I applied to help my in-laws thru their end of life issues. Even though I was the only family member around. Their son had passed and myself and my kids were the only family they had left.
FMLA is a fabulous thing for those in crisis and need due to an event. I see too many FMLAs and suspect it being abused by some. Just need stricter guidelines.
