I was a great deal more enthusiastic about keeping the government open when it wasn't actively involved in grifting and undermining/undercutting a myriad of rights. I'm your age, Senator, and I have never felt the contempt for my government that I feel today.

This is Trump, who has said (more than once) that the government needs a “good” shutdown. He obviously has no idea of the cost of a shutdown, nor does he care.
