Great read! Would like to hear your thoughts how the politics of this particular class align with Colin Woodward's concept of 11 rival American cultures.

Thought this was really good & is never actually talked about by "the pundit class" b/c they have no experience in these communities. Only NYC, DC, etc. exist to them & the rest of the US might as well be a foreign country.
-
If anything, the gentry class perpetuates the myth that staying in your hometown is somehow more noble or more American. But those communities can be really alienating and unwelcoming. It's why NYC, DC, etc. are filled with high-achieving and creative class transplants.

As is often the case, many of these themes are addressed in Road House.

I never think of Road House as economic or political commentary, but, yeah.

I love this because 1) we've been talking about this for literally a decade now (!!!) and 2) I finally have a link I can use when I make similar arguments to other people!

I was thinking about our conversations the whole time as I was writing this!

car dealers are fascinating because they're incredibly, stupefyingly Republican yet their whole business model relies on heavy government intervention legally mandating their existence

Do you still have plans to write an article that lays out how to read and digest many books in a short period of time?
