"Why won't they attack the frontrunner?" That's the eternal question! And one that ignores the interpersonal dynamics among candidates in multi-candidate fields.

In the '08 GOP primaries, the other candidates joked in the bathroom about Romney being the one they all hated, and so they ganged up on him in debates. In '12, Romney went out of his way to butter up other candidates in green rooms, and it paid off.

Running for President is a bruising, grueling business. Interpersonal friendships and animosities matter. Eventually as the frontrunner, you will be attacked. But not doing things that get your fellow candidates to hate you can delay that moment until it doesn't matter anymore.
