Interesting read and backs up what we found in Time to Choose about the variation in waiting times across England.

Just over half of the people waiting more than 2 years for elective care are concentrated in seven ICSs. Our long read analyses the size of the backlog and some of the other challenges facing ICSs in England. Read more ➡️ health.org.uk/publications/l

Another appalling report on maternity service failures. Avoidable deaths continue and it’s infuriating & frustrating to see the same mistakes happening over and over …. My heart is with every family affected 🙏🏻 #EastKent #patientsafety #Informedconsent

BREAKING: The report into poor maternity care at #EastKent has been published and says it found a clear pattern of poor care leading to 45 baby deaths. Better care could have made a difference in 97 cases examined. Read the report here: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/upl

I've gathered some of my thoughts after reading the Kirkup recommendations. You can read them on website.

Enough's enough. Our Chief Executive @rachelpower222 reflects on the report into East Kent maternity services. "...hospitals should care about the truth and worry less about reputation management". #patientsafety #maternitysafety patients-association.org.uk/news/maternity

"The same underlying themes coming up time and time again; themes of organisational and regulatory leadership, failure to learn and act upon that learning; failure to set standards for behaviours and hold people to account within a just culture. These are systemic failures."

This week we sent a letter to the Chancellor asking for an urgent Funded Winter Plan for #SocialCare. Care needs to be an immediate priority else we fear that provision will continue to decline at the expense of both individuals and the NHS.
A Funded Social Care Winter Plan needs to address staff shortages with better pay for all staff, help local authorities keep people's care costs down and tackle the backlog in assessments and reviews, and give unpaid carers more funding for breaks.

Appalling. Enough's enough. How many babies need to die, how many women need to be damaged and families left grieving before patients can trust maternity services? #maternitysafety

Pressure at work does not excuse unkind, heartless care. It's a reflection of a culture that tolerates a lack of compassion in caring for patients and their families.
Quote Tweet
Report also found women were blamed for what happened, poor working culture between consultants and midwifes with cliques and egos undermining patient care. Lots of evidence of unkind or heartless remarks to families from staff.

It was January 2020 when I first reported on concerns about maternity care at #EastKent...today an inquiry looking at more than 200 cases will report its findings. It will be bad. My thoughts are with all the families, as sunlight finally breaks over another maternity disaster
