My book 'The False Promise of Liberal Order: Nostalgia, Delusion and the Rise of Trump' is now available for pre-order. The world is too dangerous & conflicted to be ordered liberally, & overstriving to spread democracy abroad will destroy it at home:

As this excellent piece points out, despite Trump's rhetoric about ending wars and bringing troops home, he has sent more troops to the Middle East, ratcheted up the bombing of Afghanistan, and brought us to the brink of war with Iran.

A very good and provocative rejoinder to our piece - Athenian imperialism was “[n]ot so much weaponized interdependence … but [quite limited] interdependence at spearpoint “

And as your own complaint about being accused of being an apologist for GCC-backed Islamist groups suggests, it is unfair to be so maligned just for making a good-faith judgement call. That applies in both directions.

The broader problem is that any claim about atrocities will benefit some party in that war, who will use that favourable opinion. Your allegations about academics being knowing or unwitting propagandists contributes to the corruption of the discussion and the search for truth.

One can say that Assad -with Russian backing - has committed grave atrocities while also legitimately pointing to the internal expert dissent and possible suppression of evidence within the OPCW report over the CW attack in Douma.

That sounds distressing. Calling people "useful idiots" and mouthpieces of hostile foreign powers also qualifies as "abuse online", no? The Syria debate is toxic because anyone taking any position on atrocity allegations can be branded an apologist for someone.

Over the past six months, there have been three reported US strikes in Yemen. Only one is acknowledged by the US. That strike targeted Iran not AQAP. Is the Yemen war coming to a close, going covert, or merely seeing a temporary decline in pace?
